He may have won the day, but Philippe Gilbert got a nasty surprised when he put the breakaway in the gutter at Driedaagse De Panne.

Philippe Gilbert put in a fantastic rider yesterday to win the opening stage at Driedaagse De Panne.

But the Belgian national champion’s efforts to put the breakaway under as much pressure as possible on the breakaway very nearly came unstuck.

With 38km remaining and the next group on the road less than 40 seconds back, Gilbert went to the front of the escape and lined it out.

With the breeze coming from the rider’s right, Gilbert hugged the left side of the road ensuring those further back the line had little or no shelter.

He was forced to weave in and out to ride around parked cars and when he got to a fork in the road where a marshal was stood to point the direction things got a little too interesting.

The marshal was there to indicate to the riders to keep slightly to their right so as to avoid riding onto a grass verge or down a cycle lane.

However, the marshal doesn’t seem to be waving his flag or blowing a whistle or in any way projecting his message to the rider.

Gilbert clearly didn’t know who he was and shouted at him to get out of the way.

And the rest of the riders behind somehow avoided hitting the marshal, though it was close.
