Nasty crash for Antonio Tiberi (19)

Italian teenager Antonio Tiberi is making his debut at WorldTour level for Trek Segafredo at UAE Tour and today came a cropper at the end of an otherwise respectable ride in the stage 2 TT.

Just metres short of the finish line of the 13km test the 19-year-old crashed while in the TT position. His bike seemed to go from under him, sending him crashing to the ground and rolling over the line.

He looked dazed for a moment before getting onto his feet and clinging to the roadside barriers as an official ran in to help him. While he appeared to be OK after a few minutes, he was left with some nasty road rash, with his kit also shredded and his TT bike smashed up from the impact.

He still finished the test in 19th place, some 49 seconds down on winner Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers). Tiberi won the junior TT gold medal at the Worlds in Yorkshire two years ago and should be one to watch.

Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) went around the 13km TT course at UAE Tour today in a blistering time of 13:56, for an average speed of 55.981km per hour, averaging 530 Watts.

He was chasing Vincenzo Nibali of Trek-Segafredo for one minute and despite Nibali's status in the sport, Ganna only just failed to catch him by one second; the duo crossing the finish line within a few lengths of each other.

Nibali seemed shocked as he looked behind him just after he finished to see Ganna breathing down his neck. This is a clip Italian TV will play over and over again when it comes to talking about the changing of the guard in Italian cycling; Ganna very much having taken over from Nibali during the past year or so.
