Jakob Fuglsang has finally turned his incredible classics
consistency into a huge win at Liège-Bastogne-Liège. But he gave himself a
serious scare along the way.
The 34-year-old Dane riding for Astana was leading the race
solo when he very nearly crashed on the partially wet road.
His instincts kicked in and he pulled off a great save to
stay upright and go on for what was a brilliant win.
After the field had been split to pieces and a breakaway was
clear, Fuglsang attached that group on the Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons.
And then a little further on, on an uncategorised incline
with 13km to go he shook off the last man to hold on to him; Davide Formolo
(Bora-Hansgrohe).
Michael Woods (EF Education First) was with them, but he was
first to be dropped and was caught by a chase group.
Fuglsang easily hung on to win by 27 seconds from Formolo.
Then another 30 seconds back Maximilian Schachmann claimed 3rd for
Bora-hansgrohe in a sprint from a seven-man group.
Dan Martin (UAE Team Emirates) abandoned and Eddie Dunbar (Team Sky) was 75th at 13:11.
