Video: Former F1 driver turned paracyclist, Alex Zanardi’s amazing story

Alex Zanardi is a former Formula 1 driver who lost both legs in a crash but continues to lead an inspirational life that includes a successful paracycling career.

Having driven for Jordan, Lotus and Williams on the Formula 1 circuit in the early 1990s, Italian Alex Zanardi spent the next decade with teams in various forms of motorracing, including a brief return to F1 in 1999, until losing both legs in a crash in 2001.

Incredibly he came back from that and drove competitively again; going behind the wheel in touring cars from 2003 and winning some major international races with the help of prosthetic legs he designed for himself.

While he continues to drive competitively, he has always been interested in cycling and in recent years has become a successful paracyclist, winning two gold medals at the London Paralympics.

Now aged 47 years, he is regarded as an inspiration for the way he has adapted to his new life since losing his legs, especially for his continued motorracing success and hand cycling achievements.

The clip below is a brief portrait of the man that we think you'll find inspiring.
