The Rás field snakes its way through parts of Co Meath in this fantastic four-minute film shot via drone from the skies above (Photo with thanks to Brian Fitzpatrick of Navan Road Club)
Here's a fantastic clip shot via drone from the skies above the An Post Rás today, Sunday, on the opening stage of the race.
The clip was filmed by Brian Fitzpatrick of Navan Road Club and shows the race as it leaves the Co Meath town of Navan.
Aside from simply being a great little clip, there are something interesting snippets in here.
Close to the start - 35 seconds in to be precise - check out how one of the motorbike marshals takes his place at the front of a line of cars and guides all the riders past them.
We see things like this from ground level all the time, but it's interesting to see from the aerial view the really important difference the moto marshal makes in guiding the line of riders past the vehicles.
And it we take up the action 1:15 into the clip, we can see a couple of riders at the very front of the bunch take the long way around the roundabout; obviously thinking the race was going straight.
Check out how many places they lose with that one simple error; they go from leading the bunch to being well done and would have to use a lot of energy getting their positions back.
But, as we say, aside from any of that; this is just a cool little clip of Ireland's biggest bike race.
