Sep Vanmarcke did a fantastic job at the Tour of Flanders, pulling clear with winner Peter Sagan and runner up Fabian Cancellara to make the podium (where he almost took his own eye out)
Okay, so we sometimes have the mental age of 5-year-olds in this parish, but we couldn't resist sharing this little clip.
The stars here are Sep Vanmarcke and a champagne bottle cork that just couldn't wait to get the celebrating underway.
The 27-year-old LottoNL-Jumbo rider was celebrating a fantastic 3rd place at Sunday’s Tour of Flanders, where he finished with Fabian Cancellara (Trek-Segafredo) after Peter Sagan (Tinkoff) and taken off solo for a brilliant victory.
With Cancellara riding his last Ronde, Vanmarcke appeared to gift him the runner up slot and plenty of time to wave his goodbyes to the crowd.
However, on the podium things got a little hairy.
Vanmarcke was peeling the wrapper off the top of the celebratory champagne when the cork popped out a lot sooner than he was expecting.
It narrowly missed the Beglian’s head, taking his cap off instead.
And when the foam exploded out of the bottle and Vanmarcke tried to direct it away from himself to prevent a surprise soaking, a poor race official got it all over him.
The victorious Sagan – no stranger to high emotion on a podium himself – found it all very amusing, as did the classy Vanmarcke.
Hat tip Gary McIlroy.
