The combination of high speed and the car passing this cyclist so close is something to behold; one slight move by the rider and it's tragedy.
Having done a terrific job in raising awareness around cyclists being passed far too close by vehicles on Irish roads, often at high speed, the Stayin' Alive at 1.5 campaign has put together this pretty shocking video of incidents.
They all emerged this year and were filmed via on-board cameras around the country.
The campaign, which advocates for a safe passing distance of 1.5 metres between cyclist and vehicle, has posted the clip on its Facebook account with a message about the continuing problem.
And with 10 cyclists killed on the roads of the Republic so far this year and three in the North, as well as a surge in drink driving cases in the Republic, it appears things are not really getting better.
We have a big problem with the dangerous overtaking of bicycle riders on Irish roads,” said Stayin’ Alive at 1.5.
“This careless manoeuvre practiced by some drivers needs to be modified. This is why we continue to press for a cyclist specific minimum passing distance law for Ireland just as many other jurisdictions have already done.
“This clip is a compilation of close passes on Irish roads. Thanks to everybody who sent footage in to us so that we in turn can show others what is going on out there, virtually unchecked.
“We have left in the expletives uttered by the various riders who have had the wits scared out of them by this carelessness.
“Continuing to ignore this real problem is greatly off-putting for many bicycle riders.”
