Video - Evenepoel argues with Vingegaard then crashes in crazy final

Remco Evenepoel remonstrates with Jonas Vingegaard, after they went clear, only for the Belgian to crash just before the finish today at Catalunya

Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe) got involved in a two-man attack, and then an argument, with Jonas Vingegaard (Visma Lease a Bike) on stage 3 today before going to to crash just before the finish of stage 3 at Volta Ciclista a Catalunya (2.UWT).

Evenepoel went to the front in the crosswinds and rode flat out, with the Visma Lease a Bike rider on his wheel unable to hold him. However, as he started to ride away solo, Vingegaard went after him.

But while Evenepoel was clearly very keen to strike out for the finish line, Vingegaard was more reluctant. And when he declined to work, Evenepoel came irate, looking back at him and gesticulating.

After the duo spent the final 27km off the front, they were holding off the peloton coming to the line when Evenepoel crashed on the approach to a roundabout.

That left Vingegaard - who had angered Evenepoel earlier - leading solo with 500m to go. But the Dane did not appear to press home his advantage, later confirming he did not want to take advantage of the situation.

He added he did not known what had happened to Evenepoel saying "he just went over the handlebars and I just hope he's OK".

"It looked really crazy and I hope he's OK. Obviously, I didn't want to take advantage of a situation like that so I decided at that moment to just wait for the bunch."

Evenepoel explained how the crash happened: "I wanted to get onto my drops and just at that moment there was a pothole that I didn't see, that wasn't marked. Then I lost my handlebars.

"My elbow is hit quite hard, so we have to see what is and isn't possible. I'm in a bit of pain everywhere. My elbow is open, my back is open, and my hips are open.

"I have to let my body recover a bit, and then we'll see what it has to say tonight and especially tomorrow morning."

After the crash, Vingegaard was swallowed up, in sight of the finish, by the front section of the bunch in the sprint after 159.4km of racing into Vila-seca.
