Video emerges of cyclist hit by turning truck in Dublin city; this is scary

This is how easy it happens and it's right beside the spot where a lorry killed cyclist Donna Fox two days ago; be careful out there.

With the family of Donna Fox now preparing for her funeral after she was killed when struck by a lorry while cycling in Dublin city earlier this week, a video of a similar incident has emerged online.

The clip was recorded earlier this year during the general election campaign and shows Green Party activist Ian Noel Smyth effecting being shunted around a corner by the truck before he falls.

Luckily the driver appears to spot him as he falls and stops his vehicle.

Smith told The Journal the location was at Spencer Dock, about 100 metres from where 30-year-old Balbriggan woman Donna was killed on Tuesday morning.

In Smyth’s case, he was about to turn left on Spencer Dock when hit by the trucker. And the political campaigner said with a new increase in construction again, especially in Dublin city centre, cyclist are going to be faced with more and more trucks and large construction vehicles.

“In my case I noticed that the truck was coming in at me and I managed to get in front of the truck before it hit me,” he says.

“So I got out of his blind spot at the last second. If you’re on the side and you don’t get out in front then you don’t have a chance.”

He also believed delivery drivers bringing goods around the city and who may not be familiar with the roads are also a particular danger.

“There’s a lot of larger trucks in the city centre. They are going around pretty much any time of the day and even at night and a lot of the drivers probably aren’t familiar with the city, having not been driving around as much over the last five or six years.

“They’re not as familiar with a lot of the bicycle lanes that have been put in place,” he said.
