Mark Cavendish glanced down at his handlebars for a moment and found himself hitting this parked car at speed as the Tour of Britain field was lined out.
Video footage has emerged of the crash that took Mark Cavendish out of the Tour of Britain last Friday.
The clip, below, was filmed by a spectator who just happened to have their camera rolling at the spot on Gun Hill during stage 6 from Stoke-on-Trent to Nottingham where the British star came down.
The Manxman is sitting in the line of riders as the pace is clearly on going up the climb. The wind is from the left, with the riders lined out in the gutter on the right of the road.
Cavendish glances down for a moment and promptly finds himself smacking into a parked car and being thrown forward a distance because of his momentum.
The rider just behind him - Madison-Genesis man Tom Stewart – can’t help but hit the stricken Etixx-Quick Step rider, but thankfully everyone else manages to avoid him.
Cavendish lies in the roadway and it’s clear from the outset that he is not getting up to continue, as the pros normally do.
He was forced out of the race but his team quickly announced he had no serious injuries.
Clearly recovered, he has been named in the Great Britain team for the elite men’s road race at the World Championships in the US next Sunday week.
