Video: Eddy Merckx introducing himself to Eddie Dunbar after his epic solo breakaway

Eddy Merckx looked pretty impressed when introducing himself to Eddie Dunbar and congratulating him on his stunning Nations Cup ride in France.

Rising Irish star Eddie Dunbar spent well over 100km up the road on his own at La Côte Picarde today, Wednesday; round 3 of the U23 Nations Cup Series.

He was only overhauled inside the final 15km and stayed with the depleted peloton to finish 42nd on the day.

While he was recaptured, his performance was an amazing ride that won him the climbers' award on the day and did his chances of a pro contract no harm at all.

The race was won in a bunch sprint by Simone Consonni of Italy from British rider Owain Doull and Daniel Hoelgaard of Norway.

As the video below shows, Eddy Merckx was on hand to visit the podium as the riders were presented to the crowd.
