Dylan Teuns (Bahrain McLaren) was leading into the final few hundred metres of stage 3 at Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta Ciclista Del Sol until an unusual finishing "straight" caught him out.
The riders faced a sharp right turn in the last 100 metres, on a slightly uphill cobbled surface, but Teuns and Jack Haig (Mitchelton-Scott) behind him almost went straight on.
Neither actually went off course but they rode straight in the corner before jamming on their brakes and avoiding people at the roadside.
Both riders lost precious seconds as just behind them race leader and stage 1 winner Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) took the right turn perfectly.
The Dane sprinted to victory with Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-McLaren) on his wheel in 2nd and Brandon McNulty (21) of UAE Team Emirates taking 3rd.
It wasn't a certainty that either Tuens or Haig would have won, but they had the upper hand with the finish line almost within touching distance.
Tuens eventually placed 6th on the stage having been 3rd on both stages 1 and 2 and having occupied 3rd overall at the start of today's stage, 23 seconds down on Fuglsang.
He lost another eight seconds due to his mishap today and dropped by one place overall to 4th with two stages remaining.
