Some very welcome bits and pieces for cyclists have just popped up on Dublin streets. Hopefully we’ll see a sustained programme of these types of improvements from Dublin City Council over time (Photos with many thanks to Dublin Cycling Campaign)

Here’s a very welcome few bits of cycling infrastructure that have just popped up on Dublin streets.

First off, a new set of flexi wands has been erected on St Stephen’s Green.

They are there to separate cyclists going straight from Stephen’s Green East onto Earlsfort Terrace, and buses turning left for Leeson St.

This has been a nasty tight space for cyclists for a long time, with the rear of buses swinging and proving quite lethal for cyclists as the busses turn left.

But now those busses must stay in their own space and cyclists will be protected.

The flexi wands mean the vehicular traffic turning left and vehicles going straight are either side of the cyclists at the junction.

And all three lanes of road user have their line out of the junction clearly defined by these wands.

Elsewhere, the Dublin Cycling Campaign has shared some photos of roadside steel bollards having been adopted as bike parking options.

A ring has simply been fixed onto the bollards and creates a bike stand, with a slot that bikes can be locked to.

These ones are on Wolfe Tone St and are a welcome addition considering what can be a dearth of official bike stands around the city.

It’s great to see Dublin City Council making these small changes with cyclists in mind.

The new set-up on Stephen’s Green. Buses turning left here have been very threatening for cyclists as the rear of the vehicles swing across the road.
