Dublin city centre segregated cycleway
Here’s a first look at the new Dublin city centre segregated cycleway in the south inner city.
It’s segregated from traffic and it's extra wide; for volume and for the possibility of making it two-way.
The lane begins as Dame St becomes College Green. It finishes at the traffic lights that mark the start of Westmoreland St.
When cyclists are riding into it the lane is set out by regular road markings. And flexi wands segregate it for a short distance from the traffic to the right.
The flexi wands then give way to kerbing which acts as a harder barrier between cycleway and the traffic lane.

Now just 50 metres in length, this section of Dublin cycleway is part of a planned network in the city centre.
Their construction, hopefully, represents the edging towards cycling and public transport only in the city centre.
A major College Green plaza, which will be pedestrianised, is also being planned.
It is expected a similar Dublin cycleway on College St, which also leads onto Westmoreland St, will link in with the College Green one in this clip.
Luas and cycling in Dublin city
But it will take time before the extent, and exact routes, of these cycleways become clear.
What is clear is that many of them will be needed in the city when the new Luas line is up and running.
In time cyclists should get used to negotiating the Luas tracks, though dedicated and decent infrastructure is badly needed.
If it is not put in place, the already tight streets will become much more so with the Luas taking up so much space.
