Video: Driver tries to hit cyclist only to find he's a cop out training

This driver swerves into the cyclist deliberately only to find he's a cop; Irish cycling advocacy groups say it underlines the need for undercover Gardai on bikes.

Irish cycling advocacy groups have suggested a new video of a dangerous incident in Tenerife demonstrates the good that undercover Gardai on bikes could do on the roads of Ireland.

The clip below, which has been highlighted and explained by the Islas Canarias Facebook page, shows an apparent verbal dispute between cyclist and driver that isn’t long about turning very nasty.

The driver clearly tries to hit the cyclist, only for the man in lycra abroad the bicycle to pull out his police officer’s badge; a case of instant Karma if ever there was one.

The weakness of the clip is that it doesn’t show how the incident began, though nothing excuses the driving of the motorist involved.

Islas Canarias explained what happened: “Argument between a cyclist and the driver of a van on the highway of San Andres, in the municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

“The discussion is... heating up to such an extent that the driver is trying to hit the cyclist. The surprise comes when the cyclist turned out to be a cop and he pulled the badge.”

Cyclist.ie, the Irish Cycling Advocacy Network, shared the video saying it demonstrated exactly why gardai should patrol undercover as cyclists, just like they have begun to in the UK.

Cyclist.ie said:This is why cyclists want covert ops directed against rogue drivers and cyclists, let it be said.

“No point in Garda members being out patrolling on station MTBs in full uniform. You can be seen a mile away!”
