Video: Dramatic crash in sprint finish at ‘Paddy Flanagan' A4 race, Kildare

The dramatic moment when the bunch sprint in the A4 race in Kildare last weekend resulted in a nasty crash is captured in the footage below.

Declan McCarthy (Southside) had beaten Scott Kinsella (Les Jeunes) for victory in what was a very tight sprint.

But around 15 to 20 riders back there was another tight encounter of a different variety, with a number of riders falling hard.

It's interesting to see how the crash spreads in the group.

The smash underlines the need to stay focussed to the very end of a race, even if you've backed out of the sprint and you're coming in towards the rear of a group.

Clearly, things can go badly wrong in the final pedal strokes.

Well known cycling coach Paddy Doran wrote a great piece for us at the start of the year about how to race; with particular emphasis on safety and staying upright.
