Video: Dog causes crash at Vuelta a San Juan after spectator incident

Yesterday it was a spectator at the roadside, today it’s a dog in the road…

A dog running out into the road has caused breakaway riders to crash at Vuelta a San Juan a day after a spectator caused a massive pile up.

This time around the breakaway riders were riding hard out front on stage 2; some168.7km starting and finishing in Pocito.

While the riders saw the animal in the road and some of them managed to avoid it, others were not so lucky and four riders fell after one of them near the front of the group hit the dog.

Members of the public rushed out into the road to help those who crashed, with one of the breakaway men lifted off the road as his bike was broken in two.

The incident comes just 24 hours after a very large pile-up on the opening stage with about 3.5km remaining to the finish line in San Juan.

On that occasion a spectator standing by the roadside - with no crowd control whatever - was hit by a rider causing a wave of fallers across the bunch.

That crash happened outside the 3km to go marker; at which point anyone who crashes or suffers a mechanical does not lose time in the general standings.

However, given the nature of the crash and the fact a spectator was to blame, all of the riders were credited with the same time as the bunch.

Today on stage 2, after the last of the breakaway riders were swept up by the bunch the honours came down to a bunch sprint won by Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates).

The Colombian was taking his first win of the season, seeing off Nicolás Javier Naranjo (Agrupacion Virgen De Fatima) and Marco Benfatto (Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè) and taking the race lead.
