Atapuma has had a couple of dodgy moments on the Giro, none more so than the moto barging into a fan running beside him on the final climb yesterday, see video below.
We’ve seen no shortage of fans running beside riders on the climbs in both the Giro d’Italia and the Tour of California over the past week.
Many are dressing up in costumes – super heroes proving popular - and getting far too close to the riders.
But for one guy dressed up as a cat, yes a cat; his mountain running stint on the Giro’s stage 14 yesterday didn’t last long.
He was unceremoniously dumped onto the tarmac when a moto driver nudged him, causing him to stumble on the Muro del Gatto climb up to the summit finish as he ran alongside leader on the road Darwin Atapuma (BMC Racing Team).
Esteban Chaves (Orica-GreenEdge) and Steven Kruijswijk (Lotto NL Jumbo) would come from behind to catch Atapuma and win the stage and take the race lead respectively.
