Video: Death trap Irish cycling lane in action on busy Dublin road

When somebody put a camera on this cycle lane in Dublin, the death trap design became apparent in just seconds; take a look.

Here's a couple of images that really bring home how poor the design of some Irish cycle lanes are; both examples in this piece are to be found in Dublin.

The first clip below shows an advisory cycle lane at a pinch point on the road next to Kiely's Pub in Donnybrook, Dublin 4.

It's a spot many people will know well and anyone who has ever cycled through Donnybrook will attest to how busy it is and how narrow the street is for the level of activity in what is a busy commercial and residential area.

This cycle lane so tight it's actually a danger being there.

And the second item below from Al Wolf via the always informative Dublin Cycling Campaign shows another advisory lane - this time in Fairview across the city - which is ignore wholesale by vehicles.

There is a turn to the road users left and the cycle lane is designed to take cyclists from the inside of the left-turning row if those cyclists are going straight in the direction of Clontarf.

Very few drivers seem to know how to negotiate it and they simply drive on this stretch of road like it isn't there.

It's important to note that an advisory cycle lane is one that drivers are legally permitted to encroach. But in Ireland that seems to mean you treat it like it's not a cycle lane at all.

They are also completely unsuited to the high volume streets of Donnybrook and Fairview; the latter being a six-laner.
