Dan Martin has come down very hard in a large crash with around 50km remaining  on stage 8 of the Vuelta.

The pile-up has forced a number of big names to abandon, with Tejay Van Garderen (BMC Racing) out as well as Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis).

And it has also been confirmed Martin is out of the race and has been taken to hospital.

It is a massive blow for the Cannondale-Garmin man, who was 2nd on yesterday's stage and started this morning 3rd overall.

The nature and severity of Martin's injuries were not clear at the time of writing.

However, while he was stricken on the side of the road in the TV footage below, he was clearly conscious and moving.
