Video: Cyclist tussles with Dublin driver, who turns out to be garda

This cyclist had this encounter with the driver of this black Audi, only for the motorist to produce his Garda badge. Ouch!

Most of us have done it; got involved in a minor tussle with a driver we’re sharing the road with when we feel somehow aggrieved.

But for the cyclist in this clip there was a bit of a sting in the tail; the driver turning out to be a Garda member driving an unmarked car.

(For anyone reading this outside Ireland, the Garda is the Irish police force.)

The incident occurred in recent days on Dublin’s Quays, with the cyclist and car travelling in the direction of the city centre down the Liffey’s north quay.

All is going OK until the cyclist senses the car behind trying to get past him in the bus lane.

Things don’t exactly get heated – with both cyclist and driver keeping their cool.

However, while the cyclist clearly feels the car is getting too close, and presumably is wondering what a car is doing in the bus lane anyway, it turns out the driver is not breaking any rules by being in the lane.

As the cyclist protests with the driver through the open window of his car, the motorist can be seen producing his Garda badge.

Members of the Garda are permitted to drive in bus lanes while on duty and can also exceed the speed limit and even use their mobile phones when driving. They are exempt from all rules of the road.

Thankfully it all ended without anyone losing their cool, but the cyclist still seems displeased to be sharing the bus lane with a vehicle trying to overtake, telling the driver he was getting too close.
