A cyclist has made a futile attempt to evade police officers enforcing the Italian Covid19 lock-down by wading into the sea with his bike - video below.
The bizarre attempt to evade the police was unsuccessful,
with the rider eventually seeing sense and coming out of the water.
He was then handed a fine of €400 for being outside on
his bike without a valid reason, according to Italian news reports.
The incident occurred in recent days on Otranto beach in
Italy’s southern Apulia region and has been widely reported in Italy.
It appears the cyclist saw the police and as they tried to summon him towards them the cyclist made the snap decision to wade into the water.
It was a plan that he clearly hadn’t thought through and when he eventually gave in to the inevitable he was penalised.

The footage appears to have been taken by the police
officers trying to convince him to get out of the water and allow them check
his ID papers.
In Italy the lock-down related to Covid19 is stricter than in the Republic of Ireland, where people can still exercise within a 2km radius of home, or in Northern Ireland where riders can cycle once per day.
The Italian pro riders are permitted to train as cycling is their occupation. But amateur or leisure riders cannot cycle on the roads except while using their bikes to perform essential tasks.
