The cyclist on the right just moments before the car passes him and he crashes in Dublin traffic. He had a lucky escape but the incident has resulted in lots of debate online.
Video of cyclist crash as car passes in Dublin is provoking debate
This video, below, was recorded in south Dublin earlier this month and has created lots of debate online.
The cyclist in the hi-vis vest is cycling through the junction and is being filmed from a side street.
It appears he has pulled slightly to his right in anticipation of passing the cyclist ahead of him.
However, as he moves slightly right a motorist is passing him in a car. And when the car’s wing mirror pulls level with the cyclist, he crashes to the ground.
The driver continues through the junction. It is impossible to see what the driver’s reaction was as his vehicle is out of shot once he passes through the crossroads.
After the video was shared online, it resulted in debate about what had happened.
Some of those commenting believed the cyclist had moved to his right, and so slightly into the traffic, without checking behind.
Others said he had moved into the yellow box away from the side of the road where the cycle lane lay immediately after the junction.
However, others said the onus was on the driver to pass the cyclist safely. They added there was no longer a legal obligation on cyclists to use cycle lanes in the Republic of Ireland
Have a look for yourself and see what you think. You can also view the reaction on Twitter, a sample of which we have included below.
I don't think this was ever going to be a 1.5m pass. was the driver expecting the bike to take flight or evaporate maybe? this is cycling to work everyday in #Dublin it's scary and dangerous and needs to change @IBIKEDublin @Shane_RossTD @GardaTraffic @dublincycling @LovinDublin pic.twitter.com/BERuAT1jeA

There was a mixed reaction...
Only seeing this now - but this is just crazy - this happens or nearly happens a lot in Dublin -cars need to wait behind cyclists until it is ok and safe to pass - in most cases the cyclist will pass the car again at the next red lights -cars are passing cyclists for no reason https://t.co/FHy6fmG2xk

the video appears to show the cyclist pulling out to overtake the cyclist in front but there's no sign of a shoulder check. on the face of it, there's two parties to blame here.

Good observation.

Yeah he is a good bit outside the cycle lane too

Cyclists are not legally required to use cycle lanes.

Yeah I wish more motorists especially bus drivers/taxis knew this

Well when it’s in the RSA rules of the road what are motorists meant to do and if the legislation isn’t yet drawn up then it’s still the law
— Paul Carney (@PCarney1905) July 17, 2018
the legislation was changed in 2012 to remove obligation on cyclists to use cycle tracks except in specific circumstances, albeit amended in a confused manner. the update is expected to clarify that confusion. https://t.co/e7KnmL59Pu

If the cyclist looked he would have seen it was unsafe to overtake the other cyclists who were all in line.

He was in front of the car when he began to move slightly off the course he was on. Driver 100% at fault

He overtakes without even checking. Hes lucky it wasnt an artic behind him.Maybe he'll check before overtaking in future pic.twitter.com/jt5wUYsBPU

You keep saying he was overtaking. The other cyclists was still in front when he was hit. It could be argued that the guy hit was wider & taking a primary position while the other was hugging the kerb. Biggest mistake here is the road design. Needs a bike box & staggered lights. pic.twitter.com/CYsxlUMeWS

Whether or not the cyclist looked before moving out is irrelevant.
When the driver failed to brake at this point and carried on driving it became criminal.
Just because one road user is possibly in the right it doesn’t give them the ok to wilfully endanger someone’s life pic.twitter.com/JJHFG2I9aR

Correct m8, any1 who thinks otherwise is a numskull. This is not because I ?♂️, I am a ? also. ex. you're driving down the road at 20, UC up ahead, a ped. walking in the road, instead of the path, h/she now moves slightly in your direct path, UC this, but U run the ped over

The cycle lane appears to be too narrow to facilitate two bikes over taking each other comfortably in short it’s fucking disgrace of a cycle lane and probably full of bloody shores - this collision happened as that infrastructure is not fit for purpose

That is not "cycling in Dubling". Thata is _cycling_in_segregated_lanes_ anywhere. Ride on the carriage way and get rid of all those stupid problems.
