The incident in this video is one of the weirdest things we've ever seen in a pro bike race. He will never, ever live this down; you'd have to feel for him a bit.
The TV helicopter captured Lars Boom using his fists at the Tour of Norway yesterday. And now another rider has been caught taking a dive.
He happened across a crash and joined it; apparently in a bid to escape riding hard in the final.
The clip, below, is absolutely bizarre. We’ve certainly never seen anything like it before.
The rider in question is Pawel Bernas of CCC Sprandi Polkowice. As the field was taking a right hander a crash occurred.
When Bernas reached it, he effectively jumped off his bike and sat on the traffic island.
He took up position on his backside as if he had crashed, with 2.2km remaining at the time.
Strangely, in the heat of the moment, it appears the urge to stop when the opportunity presented itself was too much for him to resist.
He said if he could pass himself off as having crashed he would receive the same time as the group under the 3km rule.
“I’m sorry for what happened. It looked quite ridiculous,” he told the media in Norway.
“It was right after I had done a job in the final, my head was not clear.
“I did not want to take any chances of jumping over the pavements or stuff like that. So I just wanted to be safe.
"I decided to put the bike down, so it seemed as if I was in the crash.
“My heart rate was at 190bpm but that’s no excuse. I’m sorry for what happened.
“It looked absolutely ridiculous. I panicked because of the rules and was afraid to lose time.”
