Is this typical of cycling in Dublin? Is it normally better or worse? And has cycling gotten any safer in the last five to 10 years; are we getting more space from drivers?
Cycling in Dublin on a Sunday morning
Here’s an interesting little clip; but not because there’s an angry exchange or anyone gets run over.
Instead, there are a series of low-level incidents the cyclist has to deal with while cycling in Dublin.
It’s been posted by Twitter user @JMSellanes and was record in Donnybrook; a suburb just outside the south side of the city centre.
The cyclist is clearly drawing attention to the car that drives towards him. It comes across his path as the motorist is heading for a parking space.
Nobody loses their mind, there’s not even a shout. But the incident would have been pretty scary for the cyclist; the vehicle coming towards him until he stops.
However, if you take a closer look, there are other examples of typical low level risks for cyclists in Dublin; and elsewhere in Ireland, of course.
At the very start of the clip the rear of parked vehicles hang out into the cycle lane.
And at the junction to the cyclist’s left; the front of the car is way over the white line. It’s encroaching into the cycle lane.
This is perhaps where a 1.5 metre safe passing law would play a big part. It would bring focus to the dangers of close passing and create a deterrent to it.
But if those laws were introduced, we would of course get a wider debate around the need for motorists to give cyclists just that little bit more space all the time.
And that debate just might tidy up some of the examples of low-level inconsiderate driving in this clip.
Let us know where you “rate” this clip? Is this typical of cycling in Dublin?
Is it normally much better or worse? And has it gotten better in the last, say, five to 10 years?
