Crash that took Alejandro Valverde out of Tour de France
Alejandro Valverde has crashed out of the Tour de France in the stage 1 TT in Dusseldorf.
The Spanish rider came down in the rain on a left hand bend. He hit he crash barriers to his right very hard.
While other riders fell, including Ireland's Nicolas Roche, they were back up on their bikes quickly and on their way.

However, from the moment Valverde came off his incident looked more serious.
And he hit the barriers with a force the others did not; most of those who fell simply sliding across the wet tarmac to the side of the road.
Valverde was seen as an outside bet for the Tour de France general classification.
However, his main role would more likely have been to assist team leader Nairo Quintana in his bid to win the Tour.
