James Curry had a lucky escape in the season-opening Travers Engineering Annaclone GP on Saturday when he crashed heavily in the bunch sprint that settled the outcome.

The Banbridge CC rider was hoping to get the year off to a winning start and was extra motivated to deliver a result in his home race and in front of his home support.

But things went very wrong for him in the uphill finish to the line when he hit the deck hard and smashed his helmet in the process.

He was concussed on impact with the road and suffered some terrible road rash that necessitated a hospital visit.

But thankfully for him and everyone else who came down, there were no serious injuries incurred by anyone.

Curry was back at home recovering on Saturday night – though was feeling a little poorly.
