Opinion is split about whether the move in the video below was a close-pass or a much more serious event; an attempted assault using a car as a weapon.
The clip was shared by Norfolk Police to demonstrate that drivers close-passing cyclists can be caught by other road users with cameras.
It also demonstrates the action that can be taken based on video evidence and clearly explains the rules around overtaking cyclists as well as clearly pointing out that cycle lanes are not compulsory.
These are all actions we'd love to see from the Garda in Ireland on social media to similarly raise awareness here.
Norfolk Police clearly describe this as a close pass, saying the driver was banned for a year and fined £300.
However, many people commenting on the clip (incredibly) focused on why the cyclist wasn't using the cycle lane.
Others questioned why the incident was described as a close pass when the motorist slowed while passing the rider and then veered into him.
That point aside, at least this is an example of a UK police force sharing video with the public that clearly shows unacceptable driving against cyclists and demonstrates how drivers are now more likely to be caught.
But even in Britain - whose close pass police operations are the envy of cyclists in Ireland - there is obviously a way to go with cultural change if this incident is regarded as nothing more than a close-pass.
