Argon 18's new front-of-bike needle gives real-time aero data and is so cool and will help you go so much faster it will undoubtedly be banned by the UCI.
The lads at Global Cycling Network are at the Interbike trade show in Las Vegas where all kinds of new bikes and kit are on show.
In this piece they’ve selected what they believe is the coolest technology on view at the show, and we must admit some of this is very clever indeed.
There’s something for everyone in here including a new needle for your bike from Argon 18 that gives you real time data on how aero dynamic you are.
It involves 22 sensors being placed all over the rider and bike and joining the data collect by them to every other bit of information available – from heart rate to location and lactic acid – to calculate your aerodynamic drag read in real-time via your on-board computer.
The needle is very neat and just about visible at the front end of the bike.
So you can go for a ride and fiddle about a bit with how you sit on the bike, altering your position by crouching lower, sitting up straight, putting your head down, bending and straightening your arms and so on and see immediately the impact on how swiftly you cut through the air.
It’s a very handy training tool indeed in that it will help you tap into an area of your riding to make you faster that you’ve simply never been able to before; it’s like having a wind tunnel constantly at your disposal on the open road.
It’s very unlikely it will be allowed in races, but even using it as a training aid for road and TT bikes should prove invaluable. And if you download your data and study it closely over time with lots of trial and error experiments you’ll get to know how to manipulate how you sit on the bike in order to go faster.
There’s also smart helmets in here, automatic gears and new power meter crank systems.
