Here’s a short video showing how quickly a rear wheel can be changed in the middle of a race if everything goes right.
Unitedheathcare mechanic Nick Vandecauter is out of team car and has his hands on the bike within three seconds of the rider putting both feet on the ground. Now that’s fast.
Without panicking, the riders has stepped off the bike and loosened the rear skewer in that time. The mechanic swiftly slots in the new wheel, while leaving the old one balanced against his leg.
Vandecauter then grabs the old wheel and as the rider hops on and clicks into the pedals, the mechanic runs alongside briefly to get him off to a decent start.
With the team car slowly driving behind the duo for those precious few metres, to allow the mechanic get back into the car as quickly as possible.
We make it around 16 seconds from the moment the riders feet hit the ground until the moment the mechanic’s hand leaves his back and he is back in full flight. That’s quick!
