Esteban Chaves was "OK but on his way to hospital" after his late crash at Giro dell’Emilia in Italy, according to his team.
The Colombian, who won the race last year, was leading the pack today on a sweeping bend downhill when he came down hard.
His wheels went from under him and he bounced off the road. He then slid across the tarmac into the grass verge.
And because the depleted bunch was so tightly packed, a number of others behind him also fell.
They were chasing lone leader Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain Merida) at the time. He was 28 seconds clear and would take victory.
Scott-Orica, for whom Chaves rides, said he seemed OK but was being taken to hospital after his Giro dell’Emilia crash.
