Video: Unhappy Cav takes clumsy start line tumble on velodrome return

Mark Cavendish goes arse over tit while being held on the start line by close friend and former international Rob Hayles.

Mark Cavendish very nearly came a cropper at the Revolution track meeting in Manchester at the weekend when he slipped at the start of the team pursuit.

Now riding for the Dimension Data WorldTour road team – where he counts friend and four-time Irish champion Matt Brammeier as a team mate – Cavendish is also seeking selection onto the Great Britain track team for the Rio Olympics.

And he’s taken to the boards to limber up for that; his inclusion in the GB team pursuit line-up in a special race again Team Wiggins on Saturday in Manchester his latest outing in that regard.

Just before the off, while being held (mostly) upright by friend and former international Rob Hayles on the steep track, Cavendish was moving around and lost his balance.

He just about recovered himself and came away uninjured; a fact that will no doubt be welcomed by his new team just ahead of the road season.

Cavendish and his colleagues went on to be beaten by Team Wiggins. He will next line out on the boards at the UCI World Cup in Hong Kong the weekend after next.

The former world road race champion told The Telegraph recently that he wanted to ride the track in Rio out of a sense of unfinished business.

“I can't win the Tour de France, but I've pretty much won everything else that I can within my physical realm, so that's the only thing missing."
