This slow-motion suggests Cavendish was falling before Sagan elbow. And what about Demare’s switching in the sprint?
Cav already falling before Sagan threw elbow?
Damned by video evidence, Peter Sagan is off the Tour de France for throwing a devastating elbow in the stage 4 sprint.
Mark Cavendish crashed into the advertising hoarding at the side of the road and then the tarmac. And behind them Ben Swift and John Degenkolb also hit the road hard.
But the slow motion clip above, posted on YouTube, suggests Sagan’s elbow may not have been as influential as first thought.
Cav is coming up Sagan’s inside and makes contact with the world champion; his head on Sagan’s back.
And the British winner of 30 Tour de France stages then seems to be losing his balance from that moment.
It is only after he looks to be on his way down that Sagan extends his elbow so fully.
Also interesting to note is the first clip below, of the final kilometre into the stage finish at Vittel.
Arnaud Demare (FDJ) won the stage, but his movement in the sprint is quite incredible.
He switches across riders and is very lucky to have escaped sanction.
