Cars have been filmed driving from the road onto the new segregated cycleway in north Dublin, as you can see from the video below.
The incident occurred on the seafront in Clontarf where the new multi-million Euro cycleway runs all the way out to Howth.
One of the main selling points for cyclists is that the cycleway has two lanes and is segregated from the road by a significant kerb.
That feature adds to a sense of safety on the cycleway in that it clearly divides riders and vehicles.
However, when torrential rain fell in Dublin yesterday afternoon it resulted in flash flooding.
And when one driver drove onto the cycleway through a gap in the kerbing, others followed.
There were cars driving towards them, getting through the water on the road with no difficulty.
However, it appeared other drivers didn't have the patience to allow the oncoming traffic clear the flood and then drive through it themselves. And so they drove onto the cycleway.
Once on the cyclepath the motorists couldn’t drive off it because of the kerbing. It meant they had to drive a long distance before a break in the kerbing allowed them exit again.
They did so undertaking a line of traffic that had passed through the spot of flooding back the road with no difficulty.
Let’s hope this is clamped down on by the Garda immediately; flooding or no flooding.
