Fabian Cancellara grabbed the Swiss flag to do a lap of honour of the Roubaix velodrome at the end of Paris-Roubaix but went crashing to the ground.
Having been among the many fallers during Paris-Roubaix on Sunday, Fabian Cancellara had insult heaped on injury when he fell again. After the finish.
This time it wasn’t the infamous pave that claimed the classics legend, it was a Swiss flag.
Cancellara grabbed it from the crowd intending to whip around the velodrome for a lap of honour at the end of his last outing in the race, which he won three times.
But he seemed to lose his concentration or perhaps the flag was just too big to handle, and he came crashing down onto the track.
Happily he remounted and did not appear to be seriously injured.
He rolled around the track having finished 7:35 down on winner Matt Hayman (Orica-GreenEdge).
More to follow.
Poor Cancellara, what a way to bow out!
