An on-board camera and one fitted only the following car captured every inch of this highly unusual crash.
Not many people realise it but all the time clubs and volunteers are bringing young Irish and British riders away to mainland Europe to gain international racing experience.
And during on such trip to Belgium, British junior rider Sam Henning got lots and lots of experience.
The TT specialist, who riders for the HMT outfit linked to JLT Condor, is a TT specialist and was really giving it socks in the 6km test at the Keizer der Juniores.
He overshot a corner about half way through his effort near Wulpen and went off road, flying into a deep drain filled with water.
The splash he made can clearly be seen on camera and his own on-board footage really brings home how complete submerged he was.
He remounted and the finished the stage; second from last, soaking wet and freezing cold.
Even his mechanic had to go in after him just in case he got into difficulty.
“Stage 2 was alright until 3k in, I went around a corner and the crosswind caught my front wheel and put me onto the grass,” Henning explains in the video below.
“I thought I could save it but I went over the handlebars and ended up in a ditch.”
