Irish county man Conn McDunphy and An Post-Chainreaction man Damien Shaw show the strain in the Blackhills. Eoin Morton is just behind in the Irish national kit.

Mark Downey set the international track season on fire late last year and earlier in 2017; winning medal after medal at the UCI World Cups.

But he's back on the road now and is based in France. He rode the Rás last week on the Irish national team.

His best stage result was 8th into Donegal last Friday. But he was also 9th on stage 4 into Buncrana and 10th on the final stage.

Downey was 11th on both stages 5 and 7, into Dungloe and Ardee respectively.

That all added up to his 11th place overall, a very good ride for a man who is still finding his best road legs after a very long campaign on the boards.

Yesterday he was in the second group on the road, behind the five-man winning breakaway.

And as you can see from this on-board footage he really put those he was with under serious pressure when he attacked off the front.

He put in lots of attacks, both on the flat and later on the undulating finish circuits around the Blackhills before the big finish in Skerries.
