The new cyclocross season gets underway on Saturday week, September 29th, with a race at Grange Castle Business Park in Clondalkin, south west Dublin.
The season opener represents the first of five fixtures in the now regular Dublin-based cyclocross series organised by Team WORC. The series has attracted considerable new backing this year and has been rebranded as the ‘Fixx Supercross Cup 2012’.
The title sponsor is Fixx Coffeehouse on Dawson St in Dublin’s south city centre. It is owned by Dublin businessman Robert Kehoe, who has launched a club linked to the café, Fixx Rouleurs.
Also financially backing the new series is FTi Consulting, via long-time off road support Mark ‘Bongo’ Kenny, and fitzcycles.ie
Current national champion Robin Seymour, one of the riders in Team WORC who has pushed the scene so heavily in recent years, said he was delighted with the increase in numbers at the races last year.
“We’ve taken it to the stage now where we had to start having two races each time last year; an A race and a B race. So we’re hoping now we’re going to build on that,” he said.
Seymour added that as well as an increase in riders interested in cyclocross itself, more road riders than ever were now turning their attention to the sport to help them keep in good condition through the winter months.
“Certainly a lot of people are interested in continuing to race a bit over the winter whereas before they’d have been focussed on maybe a more relaxed winter getting the miles in. We are definitely keen to get more new faces in and we think we have a good set up to offer people and a welcome to go with it for new faces.”
While riders were last year permitted to choose what race they wanted to enter, the scene will be slightly more set in stone this time around. The A races are for A1/A2 riders with the B races for all other categories.
Seymour also said those riders who win the B races would be upgraded to the A race for the next round.
“The B races are designed to get people interested, to give them a competitive outing rather than one or two riders ripping it apart. So we think with that automatic upgrade to the A race for any B race winners, we’ll bring the best of B riders up a notch and leave the B races more competitive for those still in them.”
“The venues we’ve secured for this season are tried and tested classics, run in parks with excellent ground to guarantee fast racing that will genuinely be suitable to riders of all abilities.”
The five-part series begins the weekend after next and carries through until the end of November. There will also be an Ulster-based series again this year and we’ll bring you news of that when we get it.
We’ll also have the link here on stickybottle very soon for entering the ‘Fixx Supercross Cup’ events so keep an eye out for that because the races all work on a pre-entry basis. The fields filled up very quickly last year, so you have been warned.
