Jumbo Visma rider Nathan Van Hooydonck has been taken to hospital in Belgium in a critical condition after being involved in road traffic crash in the Kalmthout, Antwerp, on Tuesday morning.

While the cause of the crash was not yet determined, reports in the Belgian media suggest the rider was in a car sitting at a junction when it accelerated across the junction and into several vehicles.

One possibility being explored is that Van Hooydonck suddenly had a medical emergency and accidentally accelerated across a junction and crashing into other cars. His pregnant wife was in the passenger seat of his car and she is not believed to be injured.

“A car with two occupants was waiting at the traffic lights at the intersection of Dorpsstraat and Kapelsesteenweg,” Patrick De Smedt of the Grens police told Het Nieuwsblad

The crash occurred at 8.30am and as the car Hooydonck was driving went through the intersection it hit other vehicles, with five cars damaged.

“He was resuscitated on site and taken to hospital in life-threatening condition,” De Smedt added. “His pregnant wife who was sitting next to him was not injured, but was also taken to hospital for a check-up.”

More to come.
