Van driver accused of knocking down and assaulting cyclist in viral video charged by police

A cyclist's apparent unwillingness to make a criminal complaint about a driver who appeared to assault him has not stopped the police pursuing the case.

When a cyclist was knocked from his bike by a van driver who then appeared to assault him, the footage captured on the cyclist’s headcam went viral.

The police in the UK sent out Tweets urging the cyclist to come forward once the clip went public last week.

However, it soon emerged the cyclist had already alerted the police about what had happened shortly after the incident occurred last month.

And when the footage emerged late last week the driver presented himself to the police for questioning.

The police then revealed the cyclist had stopped short of making a criminal complaint and that no further action had been taken.

But news has emerged today that the Metropolitan Police continued with its inquiries and the matter has gone down the legal route.

The police in Havering, a borough of London, have confirmed via two Tweets that the van driver has been charged.

The first tweet read: “The suspect in this matter has been charged with a public order offence (1/2)”

The second added: “We are progressing with motoring offences and have asked the Officer dealing for an update.”
