In happier times: John Kerry in full kit out on his - orange - bike. He's taken a bad fall in the Alps and been flown to hospital.
With U2’s Bono not long back in action after a very nasty cycling crash in the US last year, John Kerry has become the latest high profile MAMIL to hit the deck hard.
The US Secretary of State, and one-time US presidential candidate, suffered a broken leg when he came off his bike on a training ride in France.
He was flown to hospital after falling while riding in the Haute-Savoie department near the border between France and Switzerland.
He was near Scionzier in the French Alps at the time.
Kerry was taking a break from his diplomatic visit to Switzerland where he was working to formulate a nuclear agreement with Iran.
He had also planned a number of visits to other European countries before traveling back to the US.
He had been due to travel to Spain today, Sunday, for meetings with the Spanish king and the prime minister before going to Paris for a conference on how the international community should tackle ISIS.
However, those trips have been cancelled as Kerry is now set to fly back to Boston and undergo treatment for his fractured femur.
The 71-year-old fell from his bike after hitting a kerb.
However, he was being followed at the time by a motorcade of vehicles carrying his security men, with others cycling with him.
Also in the following vehicles were a paramedic and doctor, both of whom treated him at the scene.
In March, Kerry was given a police escort to a bike shop in France when his 10-year-old bike suffered a mechanical issue.
He had ridden across the border from Switzerland at the time during a break in his talks on the mooted Iran nuclear agreement.
