An Irish A4 rider who has turned his battle to be upgraded to an A3 into a witty blog has won big at the Blog Awards Ireland 2018.

Darren Kelly McCann’s UpTheRoad.ie blog has won sports blog of the year at the ceremony in Dublin this evening.

The Cuchulainn CC rider emerged best of a quality field, with even making the short list a great achievement.

UpTheRoad.ie took the award from Girl Outdoor Magazine and Motorsport.ie.

Kelly McCann has produced a fantastic blog which captures honestly and in great detail the battle to achieve results in the A4 peloton.

His minor triumphs, bruising crashes, points collected and points lost have all gone into his entertaining pieces.

But while the subject matter has very much resonated with his fellow cyclists, his writing style is the real star.

He brings bike racing – its joy and frustrations – alive in his often self-deprecating and always funny posts.

His writing has appeared on stickybottle from time to time; his pieces proving very popular with readers.

We’d like to congratulate Darren on what is a fantastic personal achievement in winning this coveted award.

He announced he had won on social media, saying he was “gobsmacked” and thanking everyone who had read his now award-winning "ramblings".

And in true battling A4 style, he wondered aloud whether there were any Cycling Ireland points on offer for his win.

One recent piece by Darren we published here on stickybottle documented his ultimately unsuccessful efforts to gain the final point he needed to be upgraded to A3 this season.

While he got very close, a crash ended his campaign prematurely while he was just short of his goal.

And though he dreamt of a late season comeback during which he’d snatch that last point from the jaws of defeat, it wasn’t to be.

That doesn’t matter this evening though as he is digesting what is very big news for a blog he started, and has run, as a bit of fun.
