In his pomp: Seamus Kennedy takes the 1978 Rás, may he rest in peace
It is with deep regret that we bring to you the news of the passing of one cycling’s favourite sons, former Rás winner Seamus Kennedy.
A Navan Road Club stalwart for many years, Seamus was known to anybody who raced a bike in Ireland in the modern era. He passed away peacefully on Monday afternoon at the Mater Private Hospital in Dublin after battling illness with great dignity.
Seamus, or Kenno as he was known to his countless friends in the sport, will perhaps be best remembered for his win in the Rás in 1978.
But to think of him in those terms alone would be to miss the essence of the man.
He was a born competitor and won many big races well into his 40s, having been a former road race national champion when still at the height of his powers.
He continued to ride in open races and later in IVCA events as he got a bit older and the competitive flame inside him never dimmed.
He won the Rás while riding for Kerry, his dad’s county. He was persuaded to join the men from the Kingdom for the 1978 edition by his good friend Gene Mangan.
We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Seamus’s family, especially his sons and daughters, and to his many friends in the cycling community across the country.
Funeral arrangements:
Seamus’s remains will be reposing at his home in Killeaney, Kilcloon - three miles from Maynooth and on the Meath-Kildare border - from 6pm tomorrow, Wednesday. He will be waked at the house overnight, with burial after 11am mass in Kilcloon Church, Co Meath, on Thursday.
