The Danny Boy Races that were set to be promoted by Roe
Valley Cycling Club this weekend have been cancelled as new Covid-19
regulations for Northern Ireland were set to begin operating tomorrow.

“Unfortunately
we have had to cancel our open road race scheduled for this weekend,” the club said the events normally run in
Feeny, Co Derry.

“With the
new restrictions coming into effect tomorrow it was no longer possible for our
event to go ahead, the committee tried up to the last minute but the decision
has been taken out of our hands.”

Roe Valley CC
added refunds would be made available to riders who had already entered the
races.

The cancellation
comes after events in the Republic had already been called off for at least
three weeks after all 26 counties were placed at Level 3 of the Living with
Covid-19 plan.

In the North the
Ulster Road Race Championships that had been due to take place in Armagh this
weekend had already been cancelled.

Wheelers had also called off its rescheduled John

Northern Ireland was due to enter a
new four-week lockdown in a bid to stem a very large increase in Covid-19 cases.

That lock-down will begin tomorrow,
with the hospitality sector closing for four weeks and schools closing for a
fortnight from Monday.

In the sporting area, no indoor
events or contact sports will be permitted except for at elite level.

Whether than means all races – on the road or cyclocross events – are now cancelled for at least four weeks in the North was not immediately clear but stickybottle was seeking confirmation.

However, though that has not yet been specifically confirmed it appears all forms of racing will be called off for four weeks from tomorrow.

We'll bring you certainty on that when we have it.
