UK photographer captures biblical Tour de France photo

The Tour de France is only two stages in, but already this is a real contender for photograph of the 2017 edition; the moment of carnage.

Marcel Kittel (QuickStep) won his 10th career stage on the Tour de France today.

But it was the big crash that sent some of the team's hearts racing, for the wrong reasons.

Some of the really big names came down in the spill on a roundabout with about 30km remaining.

Among the fallers was yellow jersey Geraint Thomas, along with his Team Sky leader Chris Froome.

And their rivals for the general classification, Richie Porte (BMC Racing) and Romain Bardet (Ag2r-La Mondiale), also hit the deck.

British photographer Chris Auld was definitely in the right place at the right time and captured this amazing image.

The riders are in mid-slide towards the kerb. Thankfully they were able to get back up and continue.

And though the injuries will pass, this image will endure. It's been Tweeted by Froome to his 1.1 million followers.
