UCI & Zwift Esports World Champs to have new open qualification races

The UCI and Zwift have confirmed the dates and route for the UCI Cycling Esports World Championships early next year, as well as details of a new qualification process

The UCI and Zwift have set out details of the UCI Cycling Esports World Championships early next year, which will be run over the platform’s New York map.

There will also be a qualification process, meaning some
riders can book their own place at the Worlds on February 26th; gaining automatic
selection rather than depending on being selected by their national federation

The UCI and Zwift will be organising five Continental qualifiers – for Oceania, Asia, Europe, Africa and Pan America. The women’s qualifier will be held on November 27th and the men’s on November 28th.

The first steps towards qualification take place tomorrow as the Zwift Racing League (ZRL) 2021/22 Season 1 Community Division is part of the qualification process.

“The top five
athletes in each race will be added to their national squad and awarded a place
on the start line of the 2022 UCI Cycling Esports World Championships,” the UCI said on Monday.

The Worlds will be held on the Knickerbocker route, with
both men’s and women’s fields set tackle two full circuits of the 22.5km route
before finishing at the top of the New York KOM.

That’s a 1.4km climb with an average gradient of 6.1 per
cent and ramps of up to 17 per cent. In total, riders will cover 54.9km and
944m of climbing.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to build on the success
of last year’s milestone event with the second UCI Cycling Esports World
Championships,” says David Lappartient, UCI president.

“The Olympic Virtual Series held earlier this year showed
how cycling esports has the ability to drive global participation in cycling.
It is therefore exciting to reveal a new opportunity for emerging cycling
esports stars enabling them to compete with household names from the UCI
WorldTour peloton.”
