UAE Team Emirates has seen its riders and staff vaccinated against Covid-19 after they were prioritised by the authorities in Abu Dhabi while at a training camp.
It is understood all of the riders and staff who were
presented at the camp decided to get the vaccine, though the team did not make
it compulsory.
The Sinopharm
vaccine must be administered in two
doses, meaning those riders and staff who have already received their first jab
must also have a second one.
The Sinopharm
vaccine is the product of a
collaboration between scientists from China, Israel and the United Arab
Emirates. It is the same vaccine that has been rolled out with such high speed
in Israel, where about 15 per cent of its 9.3 million population has been
vaccinated in the past two weeks.
Among the riders vaccinated at the team camp Abu Dhabi included Tour de France champion Tadej Pogačar, Matteo Trentin and Davide Formolo.
It was not clear if Fernando Gaviria - who made the headlines last year by contracting Covid-19 twice - was at the camp and received the vaccine.
The team, whose riders and staff were vaccinated today,
will remain in Abu Dhabi for long enough to receive the second dose. A total of
60 personnel received the first jab or two today.
In recent days the team has been linked to Marc Hirschi,
who was released by Team DSM by mutual agreement this week despite having a
week to run on his current contract.
However, Hirschi (22) was not present at the UAE Team
Emirates camp in the Middle East and it has still not been confirmed what team
he will race for this year.
