Two-man Irish team named for European Championships in France

Ryan Mullen and Ben Healy have been named as the two-rider Irish team for the European Road Championships in France next weekend.

Both very talented riders against the
clock, Mullen and Healy with represent Ireland in the elite and U23 TTs
respective in Plouay.

Healy, a stage winner at the Tour de l’Avenir last year now riding with Andrew McQuaid's Trinity Racing, will line out in the U23 test next Monday, August 24th.

Mullen (Trek Segafredo) will contest the elite TT the same day and was a bronze medal winner at the Europeans TT in 2017.

He placed 5th in the Worlds four years ago while claiming silver at the U23 Worlds in 2014 when he was beaten to the iconic rainbow bands by less than a second by Australia's Campbell Flakemore.

Cycling Ireland last week said that due
to the Covid19 pandemic only riders based in Continental Europe and who were racing
with WorldTour teams or were carded by Sport Ireland would be considered for
selection.

It added it would send no staff from
Ireland to support those riders who may be selected; confirming on Tuesday
Mullen (26) and Healy (19) have been picked.

“Further to the announcement regarding
the 2020 UEC European Road Championships made on Tuesday 11th August, two
riders have satisfied the restrictions outlined and were offered a quota place
to represent Ireland,” Cycling Ireland said on a statement today, Tuesday.

“Both riders, Ryan Mullen and Ben Healy,
have accepted a quota place in an opt-in capacity and will represent Ireland in
the Elite and U23 Time Trial categories respectively.”
