Dan Bigham has left Ineos Grenadiers, where he worked as a performance engineer, along with a close colleague, with both joining rival World Tour team Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe.
Bigham had already signaled the fact he would leave Ineos Grenadiers after he competed in the Olympic Games TT for Great Britain, saying he believed things should be done differently and the time had come to move on.
However, he did not reveal he was moving to Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe and the fact his colleague at Ineos Grenadiers, Jonnny Wale, was also leaving with him was not known before now.
Bigham joins the German team to take up the newly created position of head of engineering, while Wale also joins the new engineering unit.
“For the past decade, I have balanced the life of an elite athlete with my passion for advancing the sport of cycling through engineering," said Bigham in a release from Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe.
"Having achieved nearly everything I dreamed of on the bike, I am now ready to fully dedicate myself to supporting the next generation of winners. The opportunity ahead of me at Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe is immense.
"No other team can match this level of combined knowledge, capability, and expertise across its network, and I am eager to leverage it to the fullest.”
Rolf Aldag, chief of sports at Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe, said Bigham and Wale were "absolute experts in the combination of cycling and engineering know-how".
"At Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe, our new engineering unit meet the top know-how of our partners like Specialized on the one hand and the innovative technology entities of Red Bull on the other. This combination is unique in cycling and promises enormous potential."
