Two cyclists in hospital after car crashes into club training ride

Two cyclists are being treated in hospital after a car crashed into a group of on a club training spin.

 

A serious road collision involving a vehicle and a number of cyclists has left two people in hospital in Donegal this afternoon.

Informed sources have told stickybottle that a car collided with the group who were travelling in the same direction on the N56 road between Termon and Coolboy at around 9am this morning.

The vehicle hit the bunch of five riders – two of whom juniors - from behind.

Ambulances and Gardaí rushed to the scene where emergency first aid was carried out on the most seriously injured.

Two were subsequently taken to Letterkenny General Hospital for further examination and at the time of writing they are still there.

Thankfully neither of the cyclists taken to hospital is in a serious condition.

The other three cyclists were assessed and treated at the roadside, though they were said to be deeply traumatised by what happened.

“Three of the five were from Errigal CC,” said club chairman James Harkin Ray.

“One was from a club in Dublin - possibly Terenure CC - and the other one was from Letterkenny triathlon club.

“We don’t know how seriously the two in hospital are yet, they’re being assessed, but nobody is critical or seriously injured.

“This was on a busy and well-known road,” continued Harkin Ray.

“It happened early on a Saturday morning, we’re not too sure of what exactly happened but they were hit from behind.

“Three were in their forties and two were juniors, they were all men and hopefully they’ll all make a full recovery.”
